Chubb and Accenture to Create First-Of-Its-Kind, Web-Based Claims Management System
Internet solution will help reduce claims processing costs
New York, April 9, 2001 – The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies and Accenture, a leading management and technology consultancy, today announced that they are developing a Web-based solution to manage Chubb’s claims process via the Internet. The application will be based on Accenture’s Internet Claims Components — reusable software assets designed to jump-start the development effort for any property/casualty insurer. The application will help Chubb quickly leverage the Internet and other leading-edge technologies on behalf of its customers.
"Filing and settling a claim should be as easy and efficient as possible," said Michael J. Marchio, managing director of Chubb & Son and Chubb’s worldwide claim manager. "Claim service always has been a key differentiator for Chubb, and we want to make sure that our claim professionals will continue to deliver superior service supported by the most advanced technology available. We also need applications that can handle all lines of our business around the world at the level of operational complexity demanded by our niche approach to underwriting."
Insurers worldwide are considering automating their claims management systems via the Web because of the potential cost savings and the possibility of using the platform to support new business initiatives.
The project will be delivered in two releases:
Claims Workstation: The first release will be a new desktop workstation that will enable Chubb’s claims professionals to handle all aspects of the claim process — including entering contact information, accessing claim history, writing and retrieving file documentation, and generating letters and other correspondence — using their browser. The first-release workstation will support all lines of business for all states, and is expected to be released this summer. Claims Financial System:Second, Accenture and Chubb will develop a new financial transaction processing system for Chubb claims that will replace the insurer’s core legacy application. The new system will handle coverage confirmation, reserving, payment and statistical transactions for commercial, personal lines and specialty commercial products. The new financial components will be introduced for Chubb’s Worker’s Compensation line of business in the United States, and then rolled out to other lines of business shortly thereafter. The financial system is expected to be released later in the year.
Because the solution is based on Accenture’s Internet Claims Components, Chubb also will significantly reduce its development time. "By using our Claims Components as a base, Chubb gained an 18-month advantage in its schedule for creating a Web-based claims system," said Vic Guyan, a partner in Accenture’s Financial Services practice responsible for the Internet Claims Solution. "This is really a best-of-both-worlds approach for Chubb. They get a custom claims application because they are in complete control of the specifications and modifications to the solution, but they are starting with a base — Accenture’s Internet Claims Components — that has a proven track record with several insurers already in production."
Chubb’s IT staff will participate in the development and manage the integration of these applications within the overall Chubb suite of systems. "We chose to work with Accenture because of their industry knowledge and their Claims Components solution, which enables us to harness the power of Web technologies more quickly and efficiently than any other approach," said Jim Knight, Chubb’s senior IT manager for claims.
