Cellnex Telecom, Accenture and ENGIE implement CityOS, Barcelona’s operating system

Contract expands the city’s smart management solutions

BARCELONA, Oct. 13, 2016 – Barcelona City Council has awarded a 30-month contract to promote the development of CityOS, an experimental operating system that streamlines the collection and analysis of information across all city services to help anticipate needs and improve citizen’s advice and assistance services. In line with Barcelona City Council’s technological sovereignty strategy, CityOS will foster citizens’ control of data and the common good by incorporating the principles of responsible innovation and ethics in data management.

The contract has been awarded to Collaborative Innovation & Municipal Organizations (CIMO), a joint venture comprising Cellnex Telecom, Accenture and the ENGIE Group. Driving the CityOS project will make it possible to create new solutions, strengthen existing ones and improve citizens’ services by providing more and better assistance and benefits.

CityOS is designed to leverage the technology needed to strengthen Barcelona’s position as a city that is innovative, sustainable and works for the common good. The possibility to analyse data through CityOS will increase the efficiency and efficacy of city services, helping to improve predictability and anticipate emergencies, provide real-time support to decision-making and improve citizens’ quality of life and the control they have over their data. The system will operate through an extensive network of sensors that capture data from multiple sources, which will gather information to be reviewed using state-of-the art information analysis methods.

The CityOS project is designed to be replicated in other cities, thereby setting up a global network that will position Barcelona as a world leader in innovative, responsible and ethical services to citizens. CityOS is an open source solution, enabling data exchange between cities and the creation of an online community that will help to develop and expand the system. This will extend the current Sentilo community, originally created by Cellnex Telecom and Barcelona City Council, which is the current basis for capturing data from the sensors that the City Council has distributed throughout the city.
