NEW YORK, October 23, 2001 – Accenture (NYSE: ACN) today announced the development of its first application prototype based on Microsoft .NET My Services, formerly codenamed “Hailstorm.”
Designed to assess how emerging technologies will impact the package delivery industry, Accenture’s Dynamic Delivery prototype utilizes many of .NET My Services’ utilities, such as the .NET Presence, .NET Calendar, .NET Alerts, .NET Wallet and .NET Location capabilities. Using .NET My Services, Accenture is changing the package delivery paradigm from address-centric to user-centric by enabling services like dynamic package rerouting.
Accenture plans to demonstrate the prototype at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference October 22-26, in Los Angeles, CA.
".NET My Services provides technologies that will, over time, impact the way our clients in the package delivery industry serve their customers," said Scott Rose, partner, Accenture Technology Labs. "Our relationship with Microsoft and Avanade allows us to be early adopters of their technology and the .NET Platform, giving us the opportunity to develop and create new applications, devices or services that can establish new business models for our clients."
The Dynamic Delivery prototype addresses several fundamental business problems in package delivery. Accenture’s application alerts a customer when they have a package scheduled for delivery. The customer will be directed to a Web site authorizing delivery, as well as being able to have the shipment immediately rerouted to a new address where they will be located. The service cuts costs by minimizing missed deliveries through real-time access to the customers’ location and integrating with their calendar information.
Key features of Accenture’s Dynamic Delivery prototype include:
Enabling package delivery systems to migrate from an address-centric service to a user-centric service. Providing the opportunity to increase revenue and cut costs while increasing operational efficiency, and encouraging customer loyalty. Potential to develop dynamic package rerouting, proactive user notifications, and e-signatures as well as other authenticating mechanisms. Providing users the ability to share data and simultaneously protect privacy through permission-based transactions. Leveraging existing technology investments because .NET My Services is built on industry standard protocols such as HTTP, XML, SOAP, and UDDI.
