Accenture Awarded Two-Year Contract by Madrid Health Authority for Connecting Healthcare Systems

MADRID; Feb. 13, 2013 – The Madrid Health Authority (Consejería de Sanidad de la Comunidad de Madrid) has awarded Accenture (NYSE: ACN) a two-year contract to deliver consulting services focused on existing healthcare IT systems for Madrid’s public healthcare network that serves the city’s 6.5 million citizens.

Accenture will work with the Madrid Health Authority to enhance the integration and functionality of Madrid’s healthcare technology systems across 36 hospitals, 29 specialized treatment centers and more than 400 primary care facilities. The scope of the initiative includes traditional project management and an advisory role in which Accenture will support the technical and functional decisions of the technology systems.

“This project builds on the existing work we have done with Accenture to develop our IT infrastructure, and supports our goal of using the most innovative and efficient technologies to provide our citizens with effective, accessible and affordable healthcare,” said Zaida Sampedro Préstamo of Madrid Health Authority.

Accenture has teamed with the Madrid Health Authority over the past decade. In 2002, Accenture began working with the Healthcare Information Systems Project Management Office to implement healthcare IT in Madrid. Earlier this year, Accenture and the Madrid Health Authority announced the implementation of a healthcare information exchange that will host 15 million medical records, according to an Accenture report.

“This contract reinforces our commitment to the Madrid Healthcare Authority and underscores Accenture’s deep knowledge of the public health industry,” said Baltasar Lobato who leads Accenture’s Healthcare business in Spain. “Accenture will apply its broad industry skills and insights from our global network to support the Authority’s mission to offer strong citizen-oriented services to increase regional competitiveness.”

Accenture was recently awarded the 2013 Medical Economics Award for the “Best Contribution to Health Consultancy.” The award recognized Accenture’s recent work in chronic disease management in Basque, Spain.
