Accenture, Oi and TIM Brasil Named as Glomo Award Winners in the Outstanding LTE Contribution Category for Successful RAN Sharing Project

Presented at Mobile World Congress, the award recognizes a pioneering project that aims to provide broadband access to 82 million citizens in Brasil.

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona; Feb. 23, 2016 – The GSMA today announced that Accenture (NYSE: ACN), Oi and TIM Brasil won the award for “Broadband for All: Outstanding LTE Contribution” at the 2016 Glomo Awards. This award, presented at Mobile World Congress 2016, recognizes the first RAN Sharing Project for 4G/LTE offering in Brazil, which serves more than 82 million citizens and is considered one of the largest in the world.

“The project benefits society because it allows for a more efficient use of resources. It reduces energy consumption, and maximizes the use of technologies developed by the telecom providers,” said Bayard Gontijo, CEO at Oi. “Sustainable solutions like this have an important impact on a country as large as Brasil.”

"The initiative is essential to the development of telecommunications in the country. The infrastructure sharing promotes more efficient use of the radio frequency, reduces urban impacts and energy consumption. The joint construction increases the network speed of deployment and promotes financial resources economy which can be reversed for other projects, showing that the share of the economy also operates in the infrastructure sector," said Rodrigo Abreu, president at TIM Brasil.

The agreement required that Oi and TIM create a joint planning unit which would be independent and capable of operating a shared 4G network. The two carriers have maintained separate teams to manage regulatory issues and consumption. Accenture was responsible for managing the complex planning activities and operations between the two telecommunications companies.

“The main goal of the program is to provide a high-quality and cost-effective 4G Network with 100% coverage of cities with populations of over 30,000 before 2017,” said Saulo Bonizzato, Accenture Communication, Media and Technology lead for Latin America. “To be named as a winner for the “Outstanding LTE Contribution” category is a significant achievement for us and recognizes our ability to efficiently deliver innovative programs for our clients in the network space.”
