New York University Langone Medical Center Works With Accenture to Align ICD-10 Mandates to Clinical Operations
NEW YORK; Feb., 20, 2013 – New York University Langone Medical Center (NYU Langone) has selected Accenture (NYSE:ACN) to support its ICD-10 implementation program. The effort will map ICD-10 mandates to clinical processes and will use analytics to identify and mitigate potential risks to avoid financial loss.
ICD-10 is an International Classification of Disease system established by the World Health Organization for classifying medical diagnostic properties and procedures in records and reimbursement claims. By U.S. federal mandate, all health organizations must transition to ICD-10 by October 1, 2014.
Accenture will work with NYU Langone to help manage all areas of transitioning to the ICD-10 mandates, such as implementing computer-assisted coding software and helping to administer online training to the entire healthcare network, including physicians. In addition, Accenture will help the Medical Center perform dual coding up to12 months prior to the federally mandated ICD-10 deadline.
“This contract will help ensure a smooth transition to ICD-10,” said Wesley Smith, vice president of medical center finance at NYU Langone. “Aligning our clinical operations and business processes to fully comply with the new mandates will position NYU Langone for future growth and ensure that we continue providing high-quality, cost-efficient care to our patients.”
Since 2010, Accenture has worked with the NYU Langone to establish the infrastructure and reimbursement processes for transitioning to the ICD-10 mandates, including eliminating erosions in coder productivity, remediating areas of financial risk in coding and documentation, minimizing patient disruptions in outpatient care and verifying the compliance of physician documentation. Additionally, the hospital information systems were upgraded to support the implementation process.
“For healthcare providers that embrace a strategic approach to complying with the new mandates, the transition to ICD-10 represents an opportunity to create new business value,” said Gala Prabhu, who manages Accenture’s ICD-10 initiatives. “Retraining staff, improving processes and upgrading technology systems can drive significant revenue cycle and operational improvements.”
