Chris Smith to Join Accenture as U.S. Federal Chief Technology and Innovation Officer

RESTON, Va.; March 27, 2012 – Accenture Federal Services today announced the appointment of Christopher L. Smith as U.S. federal chief technology and innovation officer. He will assume the new position on April 9.

Smith will retire on April 7 from his position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) where he served as chief information officer (CIO) since 2009 and led one of the largest federal government migrations to cloud computing and large-scale data consolidation efforts. His federal government experience also includes senior positions with the General Services Administration and the Internal Revenue Service and he served 25 years with the Air National Guard. Smith was named Federal CIO of the Year in 2011 by Government Executive magazine and selected as a Federal 100 honoree by Federal Computer Week magazine in 2012 and 2011.

“Chris brings to Accenture broad experience across the federal government,” said Kay Kapoor, who leads Accenture’s federal business. “But it is his constant drive for technology innovation that will be most valued by our federal clients.”

Reporting to Kapoor, Smith will be responsible for developing the technology agenda for the company’s federal business and overseeing services provided to federal clients in strategic areas such as secure cloud computing, big data, logistics and supply chain and cost reduction.

Smith served as co-chair of the Best Practices Committee for the Federal CIO Council and as government chair of the American Council for Technology/Industry Advisory Council’s Executive Leadership Conference.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s of public administration degrees from the University of South Florida and earned a master’s degree in management information systems from George Washington University. He is a retired Reserve Air Force communications officer who resides in Virginia with his wife and two children.
