Accenture Delivers and Runs SAP Electronic Solution For Ascendi’s Multi-Lane Free-Flow Toll Collection in Portugal

LISBON; May 17, 2011 – Accenture (NYSE: ACN) has implemented the commercial back-office system for Ascendi, one of the largest toll road operators in Portugal, and will now maintain the tolling system under a five-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Accenture has completed the implementation of the SAP Electronic Toll Collection solution to support the toll collection on two roads, Grande Porto and Costa da Prata (159km). These were previously free of charge for drivers. The implementation supports the transformation of the two roads into a Multi Lane Free Flow tolling system (MLFF) with 46 toll gantries.

Under the contract, Accenture also consolidated the legacy operation of both electronic and cash toll collection of two additional toll roads, Norte and Grande Lisboa (270km) and integrated them into the new back office system.

In addition to this successful implementation, Accenture has taken on the application maintenance of this commercial back-office solution. The system now processes in excess of 400,000 trips per day, created through radio frequency transponder reading and automatic license plate recognition. It is integrated with multiple governmental and private organizations involved with the payment collection process.

“The Multi-Lane Free-Flow was a complex multi-disciplinary program. We knew that due to the social impacts and high visibility of this toll collection operation, there was no margin for mistakes,” said Fontes de Carvalho, President of the Board of Directors at Ascendi, “Accenture’s commercial back-office implementation was built upon a deep understanding of electronic toll collection processes and best-in-class IT expertise, systems integration and project management.”

Ascendi’s tolling modernization program was cited as one of the ten leading technological projects in Portugal by IDC in April. For more details of the awards visit: ttp://www.idc.pt/press/pr_2011-04-12.jsp

“We are very pleased to be awarded this important contract” said Bernardo Macedo, Products senior executive, Accenture Portugal. “The back-office solution was implemented in one of the largest and most complex multi-lane free-flow tolling schemes in the world. The challenge required a high level of industry knowledge, combined with implementation experience delivering large scale projects in the tolling industry. The implemented solution is very innovative, and can be leveraged to other models of road user charging, responding to the mobility and sustainability challenges that the world is facing today.”
