UMTS Operator Oniway Selects Accenture and Amdocs for Third Generation Billing Software and Integration

LISBON (Portugal), NEW YORK and ST. LOUIS – JUNE 18, 2001 – Oni Way, a new operator in the Portuguese mobile telecommunications market and recent winner of a UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) license for third generation (or 3G) wireless services, today announced it has selected Accenture as the primary systems integrator to deploy Oni Way’s integrated billing solution. The winning solution, which was selected from a shortlist of leading system integrators, includes the Amdocs 3G billing platform, which will be implemented as part of the business architecture integration. Amdocs (NYSE: DOX) is a leading provider of CRM, billing and order management solutions.

The scope of the project will include the delivery of an end-to-end integrated billing platform. The complete solution is expected to be delivered on time to achieve Oni Way’s objective of being the first telecommunications company to offer 3G services in Portugal.

“By implementing 3G technology we are providing customers with immediate Internet access via their cell phones,” said António Vidigal, CEO of Oni Way. “This will allow us to deliver a variety of services directly to a wireless device, including e-mail, remote networking access and streaming video. To do this, we needed a comprehensive billing system that had the scalability and flexibility needed to effectively support these powerful third generation services.”

Third generation mobile communication, which is based on the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) standard and represents the next step in the evolution of wireless technology, will allow broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia at data rates up to and possibly higher than two megabits per second (Mbps), to mobile phone users no matter where they are located in the world.

“Third generation wireless technology represents an opportunity for operators and other companies around the world to move into a range of business models beyond the delivery of voice and basic data,” said Raul Mascarenhas, Accenture – partner, Communications and High Tech industry group. “We are helping companies like Oni Way, address those new opportunities by rapidly delivering complementary and often complex business infrastructures that can support advanced wireless services.”

“This win reinforces our global alliance with Accenture and our position as the world’s leading provider of a fully convergent platform that is able to support voice and IP for the mobile market,” said Paul Atkinson, senior vice president of Marketing at Amdocs. “Our rapid delivery capabilities combined with new functionality introduced in the Amdocs 3G billing platform will allow mobile operators, such as Oni Way, to effectively launch and manage their third generation services.”

Amdocs’ 3G billing platform allows operators to launch innovative mobile IP services as well as bill, rate and manage customer data. In addition, the platform allows customers to register for services online. For this solution, the Accenture/Amdocs team will provide Oni Way with a unified view of each customer, enabling single billing for voice, data and commerce transactions.
