NHS Awards Accenture £1099 Million Contract to Help Improve Healthcare
Accenture to Design, Build and Manage Information Systems that Support Patient-Centric Healthcare
LONDON;Dec. 8, 2003 – Accenture announced today that it has been awarded a £1099 million, 10-year contract to help the National Health Service (NHS) improve healthcare for patients in North East England, including Yorkshire and Humberside.
Under the agreement with the Department of Health, Accenture will lead a team that includes BT, Microsoft and iSOFT as well as a number of other technology companies. This team will design, build and manage key information systems to support patient care and services in local communities in the North East. A new NHS Care Records Service will be the core of the systems platform.
"Bringing the right information to the hands of the right individuals at the right time is the linchpin for making critical healthcare decisions that improve patient care," said Ken Lacey, European managing partner of Accenture’s Health and Life Sciences practice.
The new patient record systems, will offer access to electronic appointment booking and transmission of prescriptions systems from other providers and will support an estimated 7.5 million citizens served by 170,000 NHS staff, including 3,700 General Practitioners (GPs) in 1,300 GP practices, 42 hospitals and five ambulance trusts.

The Department of Health invited suppliers to bid for the North East LSP contract for the National Programme in February 2003. Of the 99 companies that responded, 31 were selected in May for the next phase of the bidding process. In August the list was reduced to 12 suppliers who were allocated to one or more of five regions in England based on their preference and suitability.
The North East region includes: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham & Tees Valley, North Yorkshire, York, East Riding, Hull North and North East Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.
