Accenture Wins £934 Million Contract to Help Improve Healthcare in Eastern England
Accenture to Design, Build and Manage Information Systems to Support Patient-Centric Healthcare
LONDON; Dec. 23, 2003 – Accenture has been awarded a £934 million contract to help the National Health Service (NHS) improve healthcare for patients in Eastern England. The contract runs to 2013, and this follows Accenture’s recent win of a similar contract for North East England.
Under the agreement with the UK Department of Health, Accenture will lead a team of technology companies that will design, build and manage key information systems to support patient care and services. A new electronic NHS Care Records Service will be the core of the system’s platform.
“By creating this approach to managing and delivering healthcare, the NHS is breaking new ground,” said Ken Lacey, European managing partner of Accenture’s Health & Life Sciences practice. “Using technology to get information into the right hands offers providers and patients key information tools to improve healthcare.”
The new patient record systems will offer access to electronic appointment booking and transmission of prescriptions from other providers and will support approximately 9.5 million citizens served by 200,000 NHS staff, in 1,500 General Practitioners (GP) practices, and 125 hospitals.

The Department of Health invited suppliers to bid for Local Service Provider (LSP) contracts for the National Programme in February 2003. Of the 99 companies that responded, 31 were selected in May for the next phase of the bidding process. In August the list was reduced to 12 suppliers who were allocated to one or more of five LSP regions in England based on their preference and suitability.
The Eastern region includes: Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Trent, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.
